The investment project is a build–operate–transfer (BOT) with a total investment of USD 540 million. The sale of carbon credits from the Tatai hydroelectric project to developed countries can get up to USD 3 to 4 million per year. |
Social alnd environmental impacts |
The Tatai hydroelectric project will build an access road to the dam and power plant. The project will rehabilitate the gravel road and some infrastructure along the road to the Thma Bang district. |

The project will employ more than 3,200-4,100 workers or employees during the four-year construction phase. |
Public participation |
The public consultation meeting consisted of two phases during the study of the environmental impact assessment. The first phase was on 03 February 2009 in Thma Bang pagoda in Ruessei Chrum commune. There were 59 participants, including 28 women. On 07 April 2009, there were 58 participants, including 38 women, at the Eco-tourism office. The second phase was on 15 June 2009 in the meeting room of Koh Kong Provincial Hall. There were 37 participants from local authorities, such as the village chief, village deputy, the community, the police, provincial departments, the provincial hall, NGOs, private institutions, and representatives from the inter-ministerial and national levels. |

The project will destroy 3.332,42 hectares of forest, of which 2.949,91 hectares are permanently lost, and 182,51 hectares are temporarily lost. The destroyed forest has 3.015 hectares of evergreen and another 116 hectares of other forest. |
Environmental management plan |
The project follows an environmental management plan that provides guidance for the inspection, mitigation measures, and monitoring to be carried out in the pre-construction, construction, and operation stages. The environmental management plan includes institutional arrangements, a summary of mitigation measures, and a monitoring program. The mitigation measures and monitoring programs will include the timetable of the responsible institutions and the budget for each job. |
Development plan |
The reservoir capacity of the Tatai hydroelectric project is 404 x 106 cubic meters, and the surface area is 1,330 hectares, and the unworked reservoir capacity is 82 x 106 cubic meters. The project will renovate Thmor Bang road from the intersection of National Road No. 48 to the entry gate, which is 5.3 kilometers. Constructing a road to the dam site with a length of 9,45 kilometers. |
Mitigation strategies |
Mitigation measures will be designed to mitigate and will be prepared to minimize the negative impacts identified for each composition in different stages of the project. The agency, responsible for estimating the cost of the impact of the damages, has been prepared to estimate the cost of the mitigation measure. |
Environmental and social funds |
The project implementation will provide economic value to investors as well as to Cambodia through reliable power generation of 858,000,000 kWh/year and to be sold to the Electricité du Cambodge at USD 0.074/kWh. |
