Empowering citizens by bringing open data closer to communities throughout Southeast Asia
Open Development Cambodia (ODC) is an ‘open data’ platform, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. The mission of ODC is to improve the availability of data in Cambodia by making objective data and information about socioeconomic and environmental issues accessible to all people.
We strive for sustainable and inclusive development by raising public awareness and facilitating informed debates, citizen participation in public affairs and higher standards of accountability and transparency.
We collect and aggregate relevant data for the development of the country and disseminate it through user-friendly interactive maps, datasets, data visualizations and topic pages in both English and Khmer.
ODC has grown to become an important resource in Cambodia’s civic tech ecosystem and our experience should not only benefit our country as it can serve other countries pursuing similar paths.
ODC has also spent a lot of time in outreach activities – workshops, hackathons and visits to rural areas – showing people how to access and use the data. The site has an average of more than 60,000 unique monthly visitors.
ODC is an open source platform development by East-West Management Institute, Inc. (EWMI) in 2011 to make previously inaccessible data available in a politically neutral way. ODC registered as an independent local non-governmental organization in 2015. ODC’s “Just the Facts” methodology ensures that information can be presented objectively and that various datasets can be compared and evaluated.
Support of ODC initiatives has resulted in a considerable amount of new data being made available and knowledge created to support development strategies, planning and program in Cambodia.
