Maps are a representation of the world’s physical features on paper or on a computer. A map lets people know exactly what exists in a certain place on earth. Maps are used in development projects around the world, but they can also be used to protect the world’s natural resources. When creating a map, patterns and symbols are used to mark areas or features of interest. Symbols enable map creators to easily represent what they are seeing and recording, without having to dedicate time and space on the map to writing out what they see or drawing a detailed depiction of what they see.

Within this mapping kit, you will find instructions on how to make maps that Open Development Cambodia, as well as others, can use to share more accurate and up-to-date information with the general public.

Users with access to a computer and the Internet can create maps directly online, which can then be shared with Open Development Cambodia and other organizations. Users who also have a printer can print out maps and manually draw on new information while in the field observing changes in the environment, or when they see that what is “on the ground” is not reflected on the printed map. They can then go back to their computer and submit the information online, to help the public learn about what is not reflected in satellite imagery. Those without access to a computer or printer should contact a local nonprofit organization to ask for assistance. ODC plans to conduct training of trainers to facilitate the use of the map kit by other nonprofit staff who can then help community members.
