Cambodia among best performers in cutting numbers of children out of school

Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam are among the world’s top ten performers in reducing the proportion of children out of school, according to a recent UNESCO report. The report, released in January and launched in Phnom Penh on Thursday, also showed that Thailand was among the world’s worst performers with sharply higher numbers of out-of-school children. UNESCO said the number of out-of-school children in Cambodia dropped 66 percent to 31,000 between 2006 and 2011. Even sharper declines were reported for Vietnam and Laos. Vietnam’s numbers plunged 91 percent to 39,000 during the same period while the number of out-of-school Lao children plummeted 85 percent to 19,000. …
