Villagers Save Pond From Being Filled
Approximately 400 people from 10 villages in Kandal province’s Ang Snuol district stopped a truck on Monday that had been hired to fill in a pond in preparation for the reported building of a military police base, officials said. … Thuon Nging, a representative of the villagers, said the pond, which is about one-half hectare in size, is a primary source of water for the villagers, as there are no other rivers or lakes nearby. … Kandal provincial military police commander Mean Sovann claimed that the pond was of no use to the villagers. … Villagers are now patrolling the pond to make sure it is not filled in while talks start with authorities.
