Press release: Cambodia responds to recent article in Nikkei Asia regarding border landmine allegations

On 3 December 2025, the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) issued a press release strongly refuting the accusation by the Thai Foreign Minister that Cambodia was responsible for “newly laid landmines” along the border, as published in Nikkei Asia on 1 December 2025. The CMAA deemed these claims to be groundless and unilateral. The CMAA emphasized that the mine-affected areas along the border are a legacy of war (from the 1970s to the 1990s) and that Cambodia has not laid anti-personnel mines since joining the Ottawa Convention. The authority accused Thailand of using landmine incidents as a pretext for armed conflict to claim territory.
