City Rounds Up Homeless Before Asean Meeting
Police in Phnom Penh yesterday afternoon began rounding up homeless people as part of the city’s preparations for next month’s Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting, officials said. “We collect them because we don’t want them to affect foreign tourists as we prepare for the arrival of the Asean foreign ministers,” said Daun Penh district’s Wat Phnom commune chief Hov Sinith. “After we collect them, we will send them to the Phnom Penh municipality’s social affairs department for education and training.” Un Sam Ang, chief of Chaktomuk commune, said that while all communes regularly clear their streets of homeless people and prostitutes, the upcoming Asean meeting made the process a priority. …
