Program to end anemia in Cambodia finding success
A novel project aimed at reducing anemia is being trialled in Cambodia where many millions of people suffer from a lack of iron in their diets. The Lucky Iron Fish project uses a piece of iron metal, shaped in the form of a fish, as part of the cooking process. As it is boiled, the metal fish releases much-needed iron elements into the food that it is being cooked with it. Gavin Armstrong, who heads the program, says the original product was an iron disc but it was difficult to convince Cambodians to cook with it. “It didn’t make any sense culturally, and so after research it was discovered that the shape of fish was a shape of a symbol of luck in Cambodia,” he said. …
