Workers from the Ocean Garment factory, who have been protesting outside the plant in Pur Senchey district for weeks, will file a request with Phnom Penh City Hall today to allow them to continue their demonstrations in front of the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Municipal Court. … Thousands of mostly female factory workers have been demonstrating since Aug. 11, demanding the removal of Faruk Ahmad, a manager at the factory whom they accuse of abusing female workers. Mr. Ahmad, 38, who had denied the allegations, has since been put on leave. Mr. [Chheng] Chhoan [secretary-general of Collective Union of Movement of Workers (CUMW)] said that the factory and union were scheduled to have a meeting today at the Ministry of Social Affaris in order to find a solution to the labor dispute. on Monday, the workers stages a sit-in at the factory and attempted an overnight protest outside the factory’s entrance, but left the facility about 9 p.m., according to Pav Sina, president of the CUMW. …
