Human Rights Watch attacks IMF chief over Cambodia visit

American lobby group Human Rights Watch has lashed out at Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, for her trip to Cambodia earlier this month. In a commentary posted Thursday, it noted that the IMF recognized that corruption threatened market integrity, distorted competition, endangered economic development and undermined public trust in government. "Yet the IMF chief failed to mention this scourge, even obliquely, during her first visit to the country as head of the IMF," it said. "She ignored the misappropriation of state resources that siphons away desperately needed funds for education and other essential government services." ... During her two-day trip to Phnom Penh, Lagarde said Cambodia was now "on the way toward becoming a dynamic emerging market" with foreign investment shifting beyond garments. "The key now is for Cambodia to continue its forward march and upward momentum, making the most of its position in Asia, the hub of the interconnected world," she said.
