Press release: Diplomatic briefing on the breakout of armed offensive along the Cambodia-Thailand border
On 9 December 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation conducted a diplomatic briefing for heads and representatives of diplomatic missions from 33 countries and United Nations agencies in Phnom Penh to apprise them on the recent outbreak of armed conflict along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
Her Excellency EAT Sophea, Permanent Secretary of State, recalled the chain of events leading up to Thailand’s armed offensive and deplored the use of heavy weapons, including tanks, artillery, mortars, fighter jets, and toxic smoke, against multiple Cambodian positions, causing several human casualties and extensive destruction of homes, public infrastructure, and protected national heritage monuments. She rejected the misleading assertion that Cambodia had invaded Thailand and initiated the fighting and underscored that the latest assaults constitute a serious violation of International Humanitarian Law, the UN and ASEAN Charters, and the spirit of the ASEAN Community. His Excellency General Rath Dararoth, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Defence, presented facts on the escalating Thai military offensive in multiple areas in the provinces of Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, and Pursat, and the unfolding situation on the ground.
