Empowering Cambodia forestry communities: A synergy for smarter resource monitoring

Collaboration is the heartbeat of effective conservation and community resilience. On 10 September 2026, Open Development Cambodia (ODC) had the privilege of joining forces for an interactive sharing session at Boeung Thom Community in Kampong Thom. Bringing together 58 community members (10 women) from 16 community forestry groups in Cambodia through the dedicated coordination of our partner, the People’s Action for Development Organization (PAD), this workshop showcased the incredible impact of synergy among fellow partner organizations working toward a shared vision.

Bridging technology and tradition

At the heart of the session was the introduction of a cutting-edge “Forest Disturbance Alert Platform” designed to support community-led forest monitoring. By integrating satellite-based notification workflows of Global Nature Watch with a familiar communication tool, the system delivers near-real-time alerts directly to subscribers via Telegram.

For community members who rely daily on these ecosystems for their livelihoods, having rapid, reliable information is a game-changer. The engagement during the session was palpable, with community members expressing exceptionally high interest in how the tool works and how it can be implemented locally.

Stronger together: The power of partner synergy

This workshop was a shining example of what can be achieved when partner organizations combine their strengths. By leveraging PAD organization’s deep local roots and trusted relationships with the 16 forest communities, we were able to bridge the gap between advanced tech solutions and frontline resource stewards. It’s a testament to the fact that we go further—and faster—when we work in synergy.

Looking ahead: What’s next?

The communities’ enthusiasm is just the beginning. Building on this momentum, our immediate next action is to collaborate closely with the communities to curate and refine their boundary information. Once gathered, this data will be digitized and seamlessly integrated into the Forest Disturbance Alert Platform, ensuring precise, community-specific alerts tailored to each group’s unique area of interest (AOI).
