Clinton Discusses Boeng Kak Prisoners With Hor Namhong
The U.S. has called on the Cambodian government to give fair legal treatment to the 13 women recently jailed for demonstrating against their evictions from the Boeng Kak area, according to a U.S. State Department spokeswoman. Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday in Washington. “The Secretary [Ms. Clinton] did express our concern over the recent protests regarding land rights issues and urged Cambodia to allow Boeng Kak lake detainees full access to due process,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said during a press briefing on Wednesday, a video of which was posted on the State Department website. Thirteen Boeng Kak women were sentenced to two-and-a-half-year jail terms on May 24 at a cursory trial where the defendants were not allowed to present witnesses. …
