Number of Internet Users More Than Doubled Last Year

The number of Internet users in Cambodia more than doubled last year, but the country still has the third-lowest Internet penetration rate in the region, according to recent statistics released by the World Bank. Internet users jumped from 178,142 in 2010 to 443,461 in 2011-reaching about 3.1 percent of Cambodia’s 14.3 million people. Regionally, however, that number falls far behind other countries such as neighboring Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, which recorded about 566,000, 16 million and 31.1 million users last year, respectively, the World Bank said. … Cambodia’s low Internet penetration rate could be partly attributed to the country’s large rural population, the majority of which lack the resources and money to access the Internet. …
