Cheap Thai Green Beans Send Local Prices Downward

Large quantities of cheap green bean exports from Thailand are driving down prices of the product in Kompong Cham province by as much as 40 percent compared to the same period last year and forcing farmers to grow other crops, officials and farmers said yesterday. The competition from Thailand is expected to result in this year’s harvest—which runs from June to July—dropping 36 percent to 5,200 tons, said Katorm Sonavan, chief of the provincial agronomy department, adding that the land used to grow green beans has dropped from 8,727 hectares last year to 7,395 hectares. …
