Gov’t taskforce to address Prey Speu and homelessness
The Ministry of Social Affairs yesterday announced that it would form a committee to address the lack of services available to the homeless and mentally ill. Yesterday’s meeting was precipitated by the revelation this week by rights organization Licadho that two more residents at Prey Speu Detention Center, or the Pur Senchey Vocational Training Center, had died last month while in custody. Police often collect sex workers, drug addicts, the mentally ill and the homeless and bring them there. The facility – which is technically a vocational center, although rights organizations say little to no training takes place there – has attracted criticism for years. ...
