Outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease decrease, but are still painful for Cambodian farmers

The number of cases of foot-and-mouth disease dropped significantly in first six months of 2012 compared with the three previous years, according to new report by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). However, the report’s authors say the disease is still a problem for Cambodian farmers, especially owners of small farms, and can severely impact their economic livelihoods. A new program has been: launched to more effectively get a handle on the disease in Southeast Asia. Last year, 93 outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) were reported in 18 provinces in the Kingdom, down from 103 in 2010 and 35 in 2009. …
