Time to Get Tough on Casinos, Officials Warn

Interior security officials yesterday called on the casino operators to improve their security following a spate of casino-related crimes and said they would be creating tougher legislation for those who flouted the country’s gambling laws. More than 60 casino owners gathered at the National Police headquarters in Phnom Penh yesterday to be addressed by ministry officials over the changes. … Chief among the security measures, said General [Sok] Phal [deputy national police chief], is stricter enforcment of the gambling ban. It is illegal for Cambodian citizens to gamble in casinos, but that law is frequently ignored. … Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Chhay Sinarith, director of the internal security department at the Interior Ministry, said a draft law on casino management currently at the Council of Ministers would make breaking the law punishable by imprisonment. …
