Laos promises transparency over Don Sahong dam
More than 100 representatives of Mekong River Commission (MRC) member countries, development partners, international NGOs, and Lao and foreign media yesterday visited the site of the planned Don Sahong hydropower project. The two-day site visit provided an opportunity for participants to learn from experts how fish can pass through various channels in the dry season. An earlier site visit was conducted in November. In an ongoing effort to make the development process transparent to stakeholders, the Lao government and the developer Mega First Corporation organised a second field trip to the Khone Falls region in Khong district, Champassak province. … “We welcome full and frank discussion of all relevant technical matters. We will be open and transparent and cooperate in the spirit of the 1995 Mekong Agreement. That is how hydropower is developed in Laos,” [Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines] Mr. [Viraphonh] Viravong said.
