Govt may sell medical services to Cambodia

The government will likely sell a Japanese-style medical service to Cambodia in a package that includes an emergency care center, a medical graduate school and an insurance system. The government has decided to seek a market for the medical service in emerging nations in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It aims to spread the service and standardize it in the region in line with ASEAN’s move toward regional economic integration in 2015. The government plans to first target Cambodia and establish a medical base there through cooperation between the public and private sectors. … When Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visits Cambodia later this month, he plans to announce the establishment of an emergency medical care center there. Abe will also promise to help ASEAN nations improve medical standards during his visit. In Cambodia, a company operated by a Japanese medical corporation, among others, plans to establish an emergency medical center in Phnom Penh. The center, which may open as early as 2015, is to prepare for surgeries in an intensive-care unit with surgeons to be dispatched from Japan. … As Cambodia does not have a medical insurance system, the Japanese government plans to organize and sell medical insurance that allows people to take out a plan at a low rate in the country, with the aim of spreading a system that would keep low the amount patients pay out of pocket.
