Protesters Demand Anti-Eviction Activists’ Release
Fifty Boeng Kak and Borei Keila residents rallied outside the Ministry of Justice yesterday and submitted a petition demanding the release of two anti-eviction activists they say have been jailed on trumped-up charges. Four representatives from the two groups were allowed to enter the ministry yesterday, a day after a planned march there was blocked by riot police, which resulted in a brief scuffle. A Justice Ministry official said the representatives submitted two complaints and spent an hour discussing the cases with administration staff. … At the center of the protesters’ appeals are arrests of Boeng Kak’s Yorm Bopha, 31, and Borei Keila’s Toem Sakmony, 64, both of whom are being held in pretrial detention in Prey Sar prison. …
