Court Drops Complaint against Garment Factory Union Workers

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday dropped a complaint against five union representatives at the Ocean Garment factory in Pur Senchey district who were accused by management at the firm of inciting weeks of protests. Workers have been demonstrating since Aug. 11, demanding the factory fire a manager they accuse of abusing fellow female labourers. Last week, Ocean Garment retaliated and filed a complaint with the court to suspend five Collective Union of Movement of Workers (CUMW) members. … “This is the first time we’ve protested successfully to demand our suspended leaders come back to work after 20 days,” Pav Sina, president of CUMW, said to a cheering crowd yesterday on Russian Boulevard near the factory. …
