Court Sets Date for Questioning Bavet Victims
Svay Rieng Provincial Prosecutor Hing Bunchea said yesterday that he had summoned two of the three women shot at a Bavet City special economic zone (SEZ) for questioning next week, and denied accusations that investigators were dragging their feet on the case. Rights groups continued to criticize both what they consider the sluggish pace of the court’s investigation and the lack of an arrest warrant for former Bavet City Governor Chhouk Bundith, identified by eyewitnesses as the shooter and by authorities as the only suspect in the case. Mr. Bunchea said that he issued summonses Friday calling in the two victims—Bun Chenda, 21, and Nuth Sokhorn, 23—for questioning on March 28. “It’s not slow because we are making an effort to do it,” he said. … The International Labor Organization’s Better Factories Cambodia (BFC) also expressed “concern regarding the confounding nature of the investigation of the shooting.” …
