Airport Operator to Go Ahead With Expansion
Cambodia Airports said yesterday that it planned to move forward with plans to build a new security fence at Phnom Penh International Airport ahead of next month’s Asean and East Asia summits, even though its construction will result in more than 180 families being evicted. Speaking at a press conference on the new flight schedule for the upcoming high tourist season, Cambodia Airports’ CEO Emmanuel Menanteau said it was the government’s responsibility to carry out the eviction. … He added that construction of the fence, which would be within the airport’s current boundaries is needed to stay in compliance with regulations from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). … The families claim that to own the land legally, though the government insists that is not the case and has refused to compensate the residents. …
