Japan Asks for Tax Breaks, Better Regulations
The Japanese Embassy in Phnom Penh appealed to the Cambodian government Tuesday to help encourage Japanese investment here by providing corporate tax holidays and reducing notoriously high customs tariffs by adopting more transparent and efficient practices. According to a set of requests prepared by the Japanese Embassy for the Sixth Cambodia-Japan Public-Private Sector Meeting at the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), Japan would like the government to follow through on a promise made last year to extend waivers of Cambodia’s 20 percent corporate tax to companies entering the market here. But CDC Secretary-General Sok Chenda Sophea said during the meeting that he would only offer tax holidays to companies on a case-by-case basis, as experts continue to say that Cambodia should diversify its revenues by raising taxes. …
