CHRC urges OHCHR to deploy prompt on-site mission over disturbing sounds at Cambodia-Thailand border
On 18 October 2025, the Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) sent an appeal letter once again to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to urge timely and strict action, including the prompt deployment of an on-site observation mission to the Cambodia-Thailand border area, where serious human rights violations have been reported. The CHRC emphasized that a lack of concrete and timely action could be interpreted as acquiescence to or tacit disregard of grave violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law.
The CHRC reiterated its urgent appeal dated 11 October 2025, concerning the use of noise as a form of persecution, intimidation, and psychological harassment along the Cambodia-Thailand border by the Thai side. The prolonged nightly blaring of loud noise was reported to be at an extreme level of 200 decibels, which exceeds the safe limit for human health and has posed a severe threat to the citizens in Choak Chey village, especially women, children, the elderly, the sick, and people with disabilities.
