Panasonic to donate lanterns to Angkor villages
Panasonic, a leading manufacturer of electronics, will donate 1,500 solar lanterns to the UNESCO Phnom Penh Office to distribute to the poorest villages in Angkor Park on Tuesday, according to a press release issued by UNESCO. UNESCO will in turn hand the lanterns to the APSARA National Authority to pass out to villagers, the release said. … Anne Lemaistre, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, said, “the Solar Lantern donation to the UNESCO office reflects the continued strategic partnership between UNESCO and Panasonic, specifically in the utilization of technology for societal contribution. Through collaboration and innovation, we can work together towards environmental and cultural preservation.” … Tuesday, December 3rd, also marks the 20th anniversary of the International Coordinating Committee for Angkor (ICC-Angkor). … On October 13, 1993, the creation of the ICC-Angkor was one of the conditions given by the World Heritage Committee to accept the Angkor Site on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the press release said. The ICC-Angkor works towards the preservation of temples in the Angkor archaeological park and promotes sustainable development of site, with an aim to preserve the environment and benefit local communities.
