ODC’s third GIS workshop: GIS application in land management and education

In the second GIS workshop, ODC received 21 participants who successfully attended and awarded in the three-day workshop with theme focusing on “data collection and application of GIS”. This time, “GIS application in land management and education” are in the center.

This workshop is the third of the 3 series workshops, starting from 16th to 18th July, 2018 at ODC’s office in Phnom Penh, on GIS with Open Source Software. It aims to provide a comprehensive knowledge on the use of GIS in in the Land Information System (LIS), land suitability analysis, optimal land use analysis and land use incompliance/error detection. It additionally aims to provide educational, professionals or administrators an understanding of how GIS can be used to support educational planning.

There were 20 participants with 4 females who are working in government, private sectors, NGOs and universities in provinces and Phnom Penh including Ministry of Planning, BirdLife​ International​ Cambodia​ Programme, GRET Cambodia, Cambodia Institute for Urban Studies, Highlander Association – Ratanakiri, Sahmakum Teang Tnaut, Pannasastra University of Cambodia, National Institute of Public Health, Royal University of Phnom Penh, Institute of Technology of Cambodia, World Vision Cambodia, Hun Sen Kompong Tralach High School, Century 21 Cambodia, Grandis Timber, Hour Construction, Vtrust Property, Zillennium and Open Development Cambodia.

This three-day workshop has produced significant outputs and outcomes. Majority of the attendees said that they found ODC’s GIS workshop very interesting because it included the principle and real practice of GIS to support their works in education and land sector. The participants learnt to build GIS data management with database for Education information system and land information and do multi-criteria decision making to identify the optimal location of school.

As indicated by the comments in the feedback form, one participant from Birdlife International Cambodia Programme, Mr. Chea Sophea, who has fully joined all series of GIS workshops, said that this workshop is very useful for him in order to improve his GIS and data management skill to enhance his job performance in conservation sector. In addition, Mrs. SUONG Chanmeakara said that this workshop provides advice on data management and practice in QGIS which are very beneficial for her position as a technical officer at GRET Cambodia. Another participant from Highlander Association – Ratanakiri, Mr. YOUNG Kham, a Tompoun indigenous person, appreciated his learning gaining from the workshop and would like ODC to provide more training on practical use of data collection with GPS and mapping which are helpful for his organization. He is willing to join the next workshop organized by ODC. Last but not least, Mr. Sem Sovandy, a Urban Settlement Officer from Sahmakum Teang Tnaut mentioned that this workshop supported his work with urban poor community in order to identify the needs of public facilities such as school and hospital through GIS analysis and also how to manage his GIS data in the database.
