Garment Sector Stable Despite Workers Leaving Jobs

The Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC) yesterday said a recent exodus of workers from factories in Phnom Penh to the provinces over concerns related to a recent military build up in the capital would not threaten stability in the sector. Ken Loo, secretary-general of GMAC, said concerns over workers leaving their jobs had subsided, and many had returned to their positions over the course of last week. … “About 80 percent of workers who left their workplaces had returned to work last week. Now, it’s about 10 percent of workers who remain in their home town due to political tension,” he [Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers’ Democratic Union chairman Ath Thon] said.
