B Kak protesters ask women’s minister to retract comments

Dozens of women and children from Phnom Penh’s Boeng Kak neighborhood demonstrated in front of the Ministry of Woman’s Affairs yesterday to demand that the minister recant her claim that they had attacked police during a June 27 protest in which one of the women was injured and later had a miscarriage. The demonstration followed comments made by Women’s Affairs Minister Ing Kantha Pavi in a radio report on Thursday, in which she accused the female protesters of Boeng Kak of having attacked the police with their shoes during the June 27 protest. During the June 27 protest, Boeng Kak residents scuffled with police officers at a barricade set up on Sisowath Quay to keep them from marching to the Court of Appeal, which was hearing the case of 13 fellow female residents for their continued protests against evictions. …
