U.S. seeks to cut aid to Cambodia

Lawmakers in the U.S. and human rights activists are pushing for cuts of more than $70 million in aid to Cambodia if Prime Minister Hun Sen wins the July 28 elections. Many factors have pushed the U.S. to this point be it unfair and unjust, such as the expulsion of opposition lawmakers from parliament after they joined the newly-formed National Rescue Party and the exclusion of opposition leader Sam Rainsy from the election. ... If the department does not judge the election to be "credible and competitive", lawmakers from the U.S. Congress will seek to reduce aid, especially assistance to the government. ... The U.S. will also be urging international financial institutions, such as the Asian Development Bank, to do the same. ...
